Surveillance for CWD across Wisconsin

A major objective of the WDNR's CWD management program, as well as many jurisdictions in North America, is to conduct surveillance for CWD to identify affected areas.  In 2002/2003, the WDNR tested over 40,000 deer in the largest CWD surveillance program conducted in one year.  The USGS-WCWRU was asked to assist in planning the surveillance effort, assess the results of the surveillance to determine the probability of detecting CWD in areas where it is not currently known to exist, and to identify areas where further surveillance is necessary.  The results of a preliminary analysis indicate a high probability of detecting CWD outbreaks across the state of Wisconsin.  We are conducting further analyses to refine this preliminary analysis.
