Responsibility
Stan Temple retired in
2007 from a distinguished 32-year academic career in conservation and
ecology, and now continues his life work as Senior Fellow and Science
Advisor with the Aldo Leopold Foundation. Among his 326 publications are
major contributions to conservation biology and endangered species
management. He worked in 28 different countries and with some of the
world's most endangered species. He was the first Beers‑Bascom Professor
in Conservation; he received the highest honors from the Society for
Conservation Biology (which he helped found) and the Wisconsin Society for
Ornithology; he is a fellow of the American Ornithologists' Union, the
Explorer's Club, the New York Zoological Society, and the American
Association for the Advancement of Science. In addition to his faculty
position in Forest and Wildlife Ecology, he held appointments in the
Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies and the Environmental
Toxicology Center, and he was a Fulbright Scholar at the University of the
West Indies. He played a lead role in creating the degree program in
"Conservation Biology and Sustainable Development" and served as the
program’s Chair. He won every University of Wisconsin teaching award for
which he was eligible. He held leadership positions in many conservation
organizations, including President of The Society for Conservation
Biology, Secretary of International Council for Bird Preservation, and
Chairman of the Wisconsin Chapter of The Nature Conservancy. Service on
editorial boards included Auk, Ecological Applications, Conservation
Biology, Forest Science, Bird Conservation (which he founded),
and The Passenger Pigeon. His 75 graduate students have assumed
positions of leadership in conservation throughout the world.
