Responsibility

Stan Temple retired in 2007 from a distinguished 32-year academic career in conservation and ecology, and now continues his life work as Senior Fellow and Science Advisor with the Aldo Leopold Foundation. Among his 326 publications are major contributions to conservation biology and endangered species management. He worked in 28 different countries and with some of the world's most endangered species. He was the first Beers‑Bascom Professor in Conservation; he received the highest honors from the Society for Conservation Biology (which he helped found) and the Wisconsin Society for Ornithology; he is a fellow of the American Ornithologists' Union, the Explorer's Club, the New York Zoological Society, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. In addition to his faculty position in Forest and Wildlife Ecology, he held appointments in the Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies and the Environmental Toxicology Center, and he was a Fulbright Scholar at the University of the West Indies. He played a lead role in creating the degree program in "Conservation Biology and Sustainable Development" and served as the program’s Chair. He won every University of Wisconsin teaching award for which he was eligible. He held leadership positions in many conservation organizations, including President of The Society for Conservation Biology, Secretary of International Council for Bird Preservation, and Chairman of the Wisconsin Chapter of The Nature Conservancy.  Service on editorial boards included Auk, Ecological Applications, Conservation Biology, Forest Science, Bird Conservation (which he founded), and The Passenger Pigeon. His 75 graduate students have assumed positions of leadership in conservation throughout the world.
