Research Facilities, Department of Wildlife Ecology

Although the majority of thesis research carried out in the Department is field-oriented, the Department contains a laboratory for research in physiological ecology. This laboratory, under the direction of Dr. William H. Karasov, has a primary focus on nutritional physiology. Bruce Darken (Email: bwdarken@wisc.edu ), coordinates day-to-day use of the laboratory.

Additional laboratory space is available to students on a cooperative basis with departments such as the Department of Animal Health and Biomedical Science. Other local facilities which have been used in the pursuit of wildlife research include: the UW Zoological Museum, the UW Herbarium, The Biotron (a climate-controlled facility), the UW Arboretum, and the USGS National Wildlife Health Research Center.

Excellent library resources are available on the campus. In addition, the Department of Wildlife Ecology contains one of the country's most extensive collections of books, journals, and reprints in the wildlife subject area.

The UW-Madison's Biometry program in the Department of Statistics offers statistical training for students, has its own programs leading to MS and PhD degrees in Biometry, and provides consultation services for the design and analysis of biological research.

The Department maintains its own computer facility for graduate students. Departmental computers are fully connected into campus networks and the internet. The Department is also a partner in the Land Information and Computer Graphics Facility ( LICGF ), which serves as a state-of-the-art resource for research and instruction in geographic information systems.
