About the advising process

At a minimum, the student and advisor will meet at least once each semester to assess the student's progress and review the student's customized plan of study. This meeting is ordinarily scheduled immediately prior to registration for the following semester's courses, since the advisors signature is required for class registration.

The student should make an appointment each time he or she wishes to meet with his or her advisor. Although drop-ins and emergencies can usually be accomodated by someone in the department, the student is best served if he or she is dealing with his or her own advisor.

Before consulting with the advisor concerning a curriculum question, the student should obtain a current DARS report. Note that the process of optaining a DARS report requires some lead time -- the Registrar's office advises that a request before 4:30 pm usually will be honored by the following morning.
